How to Patch a Hole in Carpet. Tape off a rectangular area that completely encloses the hole but isn't much bigger, using duct tape. The sides of the tape should be at least 1/2 inch from the edges of the hole. Cut along the inside edges of the tape with a sharp carpet knife or utility knife. Apply just enough pressure to cut through the carpet backing without cutting into the padding underneath. Remove the piece when you're done. Find an inconspicuous place to cut a replacement from if you don't have any leftover carpet scraps. Likely places are from inside a closet or under a cabinet.
